I've got it for the PlayStation! And I have numerous characters...

Also: if you really want to go for the PvP server, go for it, but if not... don't. It can be extremely frustrating because a large amount of the quests for heroes and villains are at the same area and it can be difficult to do a quest with level 26 heroes/villains whacking you with vines and fireballs. There's also no reward for killing heroes/villains (depending on who you are playing as), unless you're in a PvP Event which can be a downer...

Ah don't worry I always avoid PvP servers anyway. It's a real shame there are no RP servers though. Sad

Anybody planning on getting it for the PlayStation? (Where I've heard the controls are a lot better, for the record...)

Nah just PC for me as I don't own a PS3. To be honest I'd rather have it on PC anyway because I'm not a huge fan of gaming online with console gamers. I've witnessed some real horror stories! lol!

Is DCUO not cross platform then? I just assumed PS3 players would be on the same servers as PC players....

PostSubject: Re: GC: DC Universe Online   Tue Feb 08, 2011 7:03 am

Okie dokie I'll give you my first impressions as I'm only level 11 and haven't experienced a lot of the gameplay modes like PvP.

Customization: Very impressive. When I first logged in to create my character I honestly had quite big concerns that there weren't enough options to make my character stand apart from the rest, but with a bit of tweaking you really can make a very unique look. It's so cleverly done that I haven't actually come across two player characters that look the same. You also have an option of showing which parts of your wardrobe that you want and you can pick up different styles to add to your collection along the way. You can also customize your characters looks in game if you're not happy with the colours etc.

World size: Massive! Honestly I'm still getting lost and being the explorer that I am I've pretty much been everywhere in Gotham. You can see from the screenie above just how big part (yes part) of Metropolis is, so you get the general scope of how huge these areas are. In fact if I were to have a favourite thing about DCUO it would probably be the various cities. I can literally just entertain myself for a good hour or so by running up buildings or soaring through the skies. They all look and feel like something straight out of the comic books, with Metropolis being a sunny cityscape whilst Gotham is always a night time affair, dark and very gothic. Marvellous.

Quests: Finally they've done something right with the quests! Yes they are your ussal "go and collect 10 blah, blah, blah" but they've put a twist to it. For example the stories (which are also impressive as you'd imagine from DC) add a bit of flavour, like if you're a villian you have to go and put bombs on police cars, or set the general public on fire! They remind me a bit of public quests in WAR but are far more entertaining. The instances are just as fun and some of the best I've played in an MMO. You can team up with an AI legend like Catwoman, Killer Croc etc. and take on not only heroes of the DC Universe but villians too. So far I've had a scrap with The Huntress, the Teen Titans and more recently Bane.

Combat: I'm still trying to decide if I like this or not to be fair, although my mate Ian thats playing has told me to keep at it because it does get better. On the plus side it's very action packed and the amount of powers and skills you get is very impressive. They also look and feel to use a BioWare phrase "heroic" or "villainous" depending on your stance. Now the only part I'm not that keen on is combos, but if you've played AoC then you kinda know what to expect, This time around however it's using the mouse buttons. However little things like being able to pick up various bits of scenery is very fun.

UI: I'm still trying to work out how to use it properly but quite frankly I think it stinks! 'Nuff said.

Community: I can't really say anything about the community as I've only played solo but I'm hoping to meet up with Jim, Ian and my mate Gabe pretty soon.

Overall I'd have to say that they've done a pretty damn good job with it, but as with any new MMO it needs some time and a little work. I do wonder about it's lastability factor but if they stick with it I can see this one going places. Smile

Yeah its just a matter of getting used to it though. It's not as annoying as AoCs I do know that. For example it's more like tap left mouse button then hold down right button. It very rarely gets too complicated but still in the heat of combat I prefer to just hit an ability icon!

I'd heard that it was meant to bridge the gap between mmo and non-mmo gamers; that it 'seems' dumbed down so that people who've never played mmos before don't get put off by it, but has hidden levels of complexity that allow a seasoned mmo player to get a good couple of months of intense mania before they hit end-game.

The longevity is definately an issue (City of Heroes/Villains and Champions Online both died painful deaths) because Superhero conecpts can very easily feel 'gimmicky' and many fall flat on their faces once you've tried all the numerous play combinations.

What DCU:O has going for it in this respect is the universe that its set in. DC has a wealth of deep and interesting storylines, characters and locations and so long as they have been ported into DCU:O properly (I've not played it so don't know), it should have the surivial factor that most superhero games lack.

A lot of sites are complaining that it seems too action-packed for an mmo and plays more like an action game (like Prototype) than an mmo, but I say 'fair play to them' for doing something different! After all thats what SWTOR is doing with storylines!

Personally I'm a bit too skeptical after being burnt by CoH/Co, but it does look like many people will get good mileage out of this......a bit like SWG (if the community flourishes)

If it just could be little more complicated... I love the "From Zero to Hero" experience. If they could create something like this:

You start game with weak powers and low gear. You may be guardian wannabe that wonders trough bad parts of the city with shotgun, baseball bat and ability to spark some minor flames out of your hands. You fight with criminals at the same level of experience, also with villain players that just started their way on the criminal ladder. From time to time in your low-level part of the city there is instanced event including high lvl players characters, where Mighty Heroes backed up by low level guardians fights against Super Villains and their bunch of low level henchmen.

And when you progress levels you can develop and control more of your powers /or gadgets and arsenal to become one of the strongest Good/bad guys in the city. Then you will be the main actor in such battles, supported by younger characters.

It should be as much sandbox as possible, with Villains Cartels and Heroes Leagues fighting for domination on the city sectors and districts.

wearing flashy pantalons from the start of the game is just not so exiting for me. And I know how much developers are scared of sandbox. ;(

But good luck to every hero here! I hope that this game will help to kill time till TOR Very Happy
